I'm double posting to bump this thread.
Anyway, I watched the first episode, and HOLY MEPHISTOPHELES, BATMAN!
The "game" scene was intense, if not completely predictable. The ending was surprising (and amusing).
I don't think I've ever seen a protagonist that I enjoyed seeing get mugged as I did Al-Bear. The guy was a dick. Needless to say, it's only episode one, so my opinion will likely change. But yeah.
The animation is..........unique. You can tell who important characters are by whether or not the pattern of their hair and clothes are blank .pngs with textures running underneath them. It's amusing.
Also, there is a strong hint of homoerotic subtext. I don't think I've seen gay implications this strong since Dracula. And on that note, The Count is SO TOTALLY NOT A VAMPIRE.
tl;dr I liked it. And I'll probably finish it soon, as I can't seem to force myself to finish Higurashi and I want to watch something that not everyone else I know has seen twice.
I co-sign everything you just said, brudda. Especially with the homoerotic undertones – HOWEVER, I think that our notice of that may stem from modern culture. For instance, in a lot of cultures, men who were as close as they were then didn't get the funny looks that they would receive now. LOL.
I think he's referring to the 'classic' setting of the anime. Despite it being stylized in the future, it's still, at it's heart, set in a Count of Monte Cristo 1800's France sort of setting. At such a time, it wasn't so weird for people to interact as Albert and the Count have.
Granted, there ARE purposeful gay overtones, considering there's a closet homosexual character, as well as a crossdresser/transgender. xD
Well, I finally finished it... and I must say, i'm impressed. While not perfect, it is easily one of the best anime i've ever seen. And bluntly, The Count is simply one of the best characters i've ever seen, ever.
I'm happy that you finished the show, and happy that you liked it so much! xD I agree Gankutsuou has its flaws [and the homosexual overtones can be a bit daunting for most straight men. xD], but I think the plot was incredible.
You should definitely check out Last Exile and Samurai 7 if you haven't seen those yet, they're in a similar vein as Gankutsuou, but a little more care-free.
