We've just gotten to episode 8 so far.
One thing that's fascinating about this series is that it's completely different from what I thought it'd be. Like... it's heavy on the drama and romance, something I usually stray away from in anime. But this is simply amazing.

05-17-2009, 09:10 PM #22Ah, Episode 8 was a pretty good one, that's when Andrea gets introduced, I believe. Andrea is such an amazing character in his own right. xD I despised him the first run through the series, but loved him the 2nd time around.

Okay... I finally finished the series.
Episode 18 was... yeah. It was effed.
LOL I think I might give a more in-depth analysis in a blog, though.

Very good show. Saw every episode. The artwork bothered me at first, but i started to really like it. Great storyline. I get this series 9/10

Warning, though, there are obviously some changes from the novel, but I think they did so in good taste. It is a fantasy/supernatural anime, after all, so yeah.

Gankutsuou is really a truly awesome anime, from the unique animation, to the soundtrack, to the characters, to the voice acting [in Japanese AND English], everything about it was just..amazing. The ending wasn't the greatest, but then again, I've never really seen an anime with a good ending, because, it's the ending! It's over, and that's the end.
Be sure to post here after you've watched it! =) And Neo, you better watch this, too!

I watched it up until almost the end... but I think I'm missing an episode! :'(
It makes a very strange and unexpected ending, and I'm sure I missed something in between! Sooo frustrating!

So i watched up to the third episode yesterday, and until that point i had no idea how this followed the book except for the names. Now i realize it just started in the middle. I guess i really should have caught on with the whole carnival thing. Slow i guess. I really hope it tells Edmonds story and goes into his prison experience.

When watching this show, don't expect them to do anything too close to the book aside from, as you pointed out, the names and such. There are some references to the Count's history as described in the novel, but not too much more than that, I'm afraid. It's merely based on the original story, but they did a damn good job of interpreting it in their own way, I think.

What's interesting about Gankutsuou, is it's told mostly from Albert's perspective, instead of the Count's, so you get right into the nitty-gritty instead of dealing with the rest of it beforehand.
Also, as far as what happens to some of the characters, it's much closer to the book than most other adaptations. Sure no we have spaceships, Mechs, and aliens...but the 'French Aristocrat' style is still very much there, and the futuristic interpretation made the anime all that more unique.
Because they focused on Albert and the children, they were able to take some liberties, but they're good liberties that made the story all that more interesting.
And, Yuri, I just hope that the episode you missed wasn't Episode 18 and 19. Those are the 'climax' episodes.
