In role plays we take on the persona of another being and write out their actions with other like-minded players. In this 'joint-writing', we grow together, develop our character and become better writers all together.

Role Playing Battles are meant to stretch your imagination, skill and character by forcing you into situations that require deep thought. 'Would my character do this? How would he/she handle this situation?'

This Forum was created for those of us interested in the art of fighting. In the following section I will be going over the basic rules for using this forum, get you accustomed to the prefixes and of course set the standard rules for 'Sparring'.

Note : This Forum is for In-Character work, use the Out Of Character Discussion forum for conversation with other combatants. Any OOC Posts here should be kept to a minimum. No one minds the one or two liners every so often, but keep outright back-and-forth conversations out of here.

Basic Rules : Using this Forum

Battles -
whether you are creating a new battle or looking for a new challenge, in this forum you should be expecting to see In Character fighting. If your looking for a story you should head over to the 'Role Play section'.

Creating Battles - Eventually we're all hoping this place gets pretty popular, and that would mean it would be chocked full of open battles just waiting to get filled! But for now you'll just need to click on the 'New topic' button, This will bring up a 'post new thread' box with the word 'Prefix' under it and 'Title' next to that.

  • For Creating new battles you can use either Open or Private (and once it becomes available, Judged) By selecting a prefix it will help others locate your thread as well as give people a heads up on what to expect!
    • Open is intended for RPBers with no set opponent in mind, these are open-ended, often waiting for someone to spark some curiosity and take a peak at whats going on.
    • Private is intended for RPBers who know who they want to fight, either through PM or OOC discussion. An Open battle can become Private, once its opponent is locked in. And I'll be checking up on this to keep the confusion at a minimum XD
  • Title - We've often seen some poetic phrases littered between the 'ANY1 want 2 FITE!' threads, but for those who are interested in the most EFFECTIVE way of Posting things up, I recommend using the following :
    • Your Name or Character Name Vs. Your opponents name (or ???, if you don't know yet)
    • Follow this by the rules you want to use, Standard, Unrestricted, or any other style of RPB you know of and may wish to use, (shin style, t1, t2, t3, or any of that other stuff I don't teach)
      • Standard refers to the basic restricted play that provides maximum control over your own character and NO control over your opponent.
      • Unrestricted refers to the kind of match that lets you do whatever you want.
      • Special refers to just any other type not listed.
    • Finally, you can head that off with any highlighted rules you want to emphasize like post limit, bio limit, time limit, select setting, capture the flag, etc.
      • Post Limit (We can call it Survival) is a special rule that limits the number of posts in a fight per combatant, this rule tends to be more of a survival mode where you don't have to kill each other just survive and have fun creatively.
        • -Often this doesn't have a victor unless its clear and concise, or judged
      • Bio limit (We can call this Hidden) is a rule that hides the characters special skills and information to restrict the amount of OOC knowledge your opponent may have.
        • -This usually requires you to have a third party available to hold onto the bio's until the match is complete and use said bio's if a dispute is raised.
      • Time Limit (Time limit is fine for this XD)is a fun rule that forces players to set a time limit for how long each other has to post, be it 5, 10 or 20 minutes
        • -This is meant to increase the turnaround time and make battles take MUCH less time.
      • Select Setting rule (How bout just SS for short XD) is where you choose a setting prior to battle and set the number of objects allowed per player on the scene.
        • -For those of you who don't want ANY surprises thrown at you, you can choose what kind of obstacles/useful objects may be on scene.
    • Example of a Final Title - Beltran Vs. Yukio, Standard - Survival
  • Ok, so now on to the fun stuff! The Message box! Depending on what you've selected for the style etc.
    • You should reiterate your title explaining the rules and styles you may want to use
    • Explain whatever changes you'd like to make to the standard rules
    • And, traditionally you would post up your own bio (or a link to it - preferred!)
    • Finally, the hard part, wait for someone's interest to get piqued.

Joining Battles - Considerably easier than creating a fight, I know!
  • You can either take a look in the OOC for anyone advertising a fight or just use the search function at the bottom of the Underground Forum, it'll have a 'select Prefix' option. All you have to do is put 'open battle' in that and look for one that tickles your fancy!
  • Remember, if you take on a battle, YOU signed up for it! Be courteous as its the number 1 (and currently ONLY) rule this forum has!

Tournaments - Now, on a rare occasion (certainly more in the future) a tournament might be held. Tournaments are just huge battles that pit multiple fighters in one-on-one fights until the strongest one survives. These often offer glory and honor (big, important mumbo-jumbo for us RPBers).

At the moment I don't have much more to say about them. But expect when we get big enough for this to be changed!

The Underground League - Well, considering its currently got just two members, I would say don't worry about it so much. But I will say this, The RSF Underground League will be huge. The Underground will be using a new ruleset for battles that will revolutionize RPBing and take the whole strategy/creativity process to a whole new EPIC level.

  • It has two prefixes, Spar and League. A Spar battle is intended to be a quick, training match. Its not documented and not counted towards your reputation in the league. A League match on the other hand, is serious business, so serious there can only be ONE League match at a time! That's all I have to say about that.
  • If your interested in hearing what all this stuff is about, you can pm me and I'll fill you in. Be warned, I have a whole school set up for this and I only want to train one person at a time. I know it sounds crazy, but trust me there's a good reason for it!

Rules of Engagement

Standard - The basic style of fighting, generally accepted, years of testing and definitely the most buggy fighting style on the planet!
  • Posts follow a Turn by Turn basis
    • ex. Player A posts, Player B posts, Player A posts etc.
  • Combatants are given exclusive control over their own character and little else, this does not include weapons (within reason).
    • Godmodding - (and its constituents Metagaming and Powerplaying) tend to be outlawed by most players.
      • Includes using skills that control your opponent, using god-like powers, unbreakable weapons, being invincible, using narrative to 'force' your opponent into an action, controlling what your opponent says or thinks.
      • For the purposes of this forum Godmodding will also include 'auto-hitting' or the process of explaining an attack and enacting its outcome in the same post.
        • ex. Player A swings his sword and cuts off player B's arms.
      • Poison, traps, instant death etc. are all also not allowed but to be honest, killing another person's character on this forum is pretty serious business and I really only allow it if its in a story. I don't like the idea of players getting killed...you can call it what you want...if your character is on the Verge of dying, imagine being Link with a bottled fairy just waiting to pop, you'll lose the fight but your character will be saved by RSF angels.
Well that's all I got for now, hope this has helped you out!
