    Afro Samurai Discussion

Afro Samurai (アフロサムライ ,Afuro Samurai) is a Japanese dōjinshi manga series created by Takashi Okazaki, originally featured in the NOU NOU HAU[2] dōjin magazine. It was adapted into a 5-episode anime miniseries directed by Fuminori Kizaki and produced by Gonzo, a Japanese animation studio. The first episode was shown online on January 1, 2007 and premièred on Spike TV on January 4, 2007 at 11:00pm EST. The anime series has since gone on to air in the UK and the US, where it premiered on SPIKE TV on May 4, 2007[3], and Japan, where it was broadcast on Fuji Television. It also premiered on MTV in Australia in August 2007.[4] The anime series features noted American actor Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of the titular character and his sidekick, as well as one of the co-producers, and also features Ron Perlman and Kelly Hu as character voices. Wu-Tang Clan member RZA produced the original hip hop musical score,[5] which was released on compact disc by Koch Records on January 30, 2007 in both uncut and edited versions. The series was also licensed for North American distribution by Funimation, who released two versions: a SpikeTV version and an unrated director's cut on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Both DVD versions were released on May 22, 2007 with the Blu-ray Disc version being released on August 26 of the following year. In the United Kingdom, a Bravo Numbered Limited Edition, equivalent to the US Spike TV edition and featuring the same red themed artwork was released on 2 July 2007. A Directors’ Cut Edition Box Set, featuring new artwork, was released later on 12 October 2007. A second Bravo edition featuring artwork similar to the UK Director’s Cut was released on 21 March 2008. A Blu-ray disc version has been released in North America. In August 2005, Japan-based game developers Namco announced they would be releasing Afro Samurai related video games. [From wikipedia]

I heard that when Samuel L. Jackson found out about the making of this anime he actually called the producers and told them that he was going to be the voice actor of the Afro Samurai. He didn't ask, he demanded for the part.

    Big ego, no? XD

Haha, wow, that definitely sounds like a Samuel L. Jackson thing to do. But, that's pretty cool! He's probably one of the more, if not the most famous person to do voice acting for an anime. Whenever any actual 'actors' do voice acting, like in Square Enix's Advent Children, they're just soap stars or b-listers, not anyone as well known as Samuel L. Jackson.

I really need to get around to watching this anime, so I'll be renting this one for sure. [Gotta love Netflix!]

I haven't come around to watching it, yet, either but I really want to since Jackson did voice XD I hope he did a cool job at it and it would be awesome if he keeps doing voice acting for other animes, too!

Samuel L. Jackson demanded the part? I'm VERY glad (yet not surprised) to hear that.

I've seen both Afro Samurai & Resurrection, plus played the video game and I have to say... it's one of my favorite animes of all time.

Oh darn, I haven't seen this anime yet but I was curious to know what most people thought of it.

I knew Samuel L Jackson was voice acting the main character but I didn't know he demanded the part. XD That's awesome of him though. I'm sure he did a great job.

He's actually a huge anime fan. Robbin Williams as well.

Whoa, really? That's awesome. xD I knew there was a reason why Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Williams were two of my favorite male celebrities. I'd love to see Robin Williams do some voice acting for an anime.

Nice! Jackson and Williams just got brownie points with me! It would be cool if they did an anime together XD I wonder how that would be. ^.^

I really liked what I saw of this anime, mostly because it wasn't too cheesy with the gore and the story was pretty much original. The steam punk nature of some of the scenes really appealed to me and the art style was just epic. It's a great watch, one that I highly recommend to anyone.

Kingdom Hearts. We all know Robin Williams does Genie, I suppose we can find a role for Mr. Jackson in there somewhere. Any ideas? xD

I've seen this show, and if memory serves, Kendra's been supposed to watch this for like a year now, at least. The show is great, and Jackson is a great actor, and does excellent voice acting. I have yet to see the second season, but I have high hopes. I've also heard nothing bad, so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

    Re: Afro Samurai Discussion

I just got the first season on dvd, director's cut (does it come any other way?). Regardless, I'm stoked because I already owned the movie. Love this show.
