A petite, ragged girl and a monkey walked briskly past the roving crowd in the robust mall. The little girl carried an ornate little music box. Some stopped and openly stared at the odd sight. Some people were not alarmed, however. This duo sometimes performed. In fact, the child and the monkey had just finished a performance. They wanted to put the crowd at ease... they scheduled this performance far in advance. It was all part of their plan.
Nimble and Jack Rocancourt were as unique as they appeared. They both possessed an unusual level of awareness and intelligence. However to the world they seemed to be decrepit, pathetic beings with no ability to fend for themselves. Naturally Nimble fed off of this image and turned it into money. Jack tugged on Nimble's tattered pant leg to get her attention. She irritably turned to him. What? she signed. The two of them communicated with a signed language. It was the most logical type of language for them to use... Jack couldn't be bothered with mimicing human voices and Nimble was Deaf.
Can we go into Verizon first and get a set of Blackbery phones? Jack asked.
Of course not, Nimble said dismissively. We need to get to the Carnelian Heart NOW.
Jack sighed. He had a bad feeling about this mission. It was much too risky. The two of them entered Gordon's Jewelers. Nimble had a note prepared for the retail clerk. She walked briskly to the clerk and handed her a note. Puzzled, the clerk took the note and read it. Her expression changed to even deeper puzzlement as she pointed to an area near the back of the store.
Nimble looked in the direction the clerk was pointing. She jumped in surprise. There it was! The Carnelian Heart! It was exquisite... It had not yet been carved or polished, yet it shone with its own unhewn beauty. Most people had no clue as to its real significance... it was rumored that the Carnelian Heart gave the wielder the power of fire. Nimble wasn't quite sure what that meant, but that made it quite valuable. Nimble had to have it.
Another store clerk had the item in her hand. She was bringing it toward them... But Nimble already knew the store clerk was likely bringing it to someone else. The retail clerk, perhaps? Nimble looked up. A cloaked figure was standing next to them. Nimble couldn't see much else... but she had a very unpleasant feeling. It was very similar to the feeling that preceded the terror of the body's fight or flight response. It was instinct. Something was wrong with their plans... and this cloaked person had something to do with it. It was time for a change of plans... time to do things the hard way.
Nimble clicked low in her throat to get Jack's attention. Jack looked at her hurriedly signed instructions and followed. He "tripped" and fell into the clerk. The clerk was not accustomed to stumbling over a small monkey. She fell forward. Nimble rushed over to him. He had taken the opportunity to secure the Carnelian Heart during the clerk's fall... but they only had mere seconds to make their break before the clerk realized it was stolen. Nimble picked up Jack in a show of concern and made her way toward the door. The foreboding feeling she had grew stronger. Please, let me be overreacting... Nimble thought to herself. Nimble did not understand what was triggering her fear, but she continued to make a break for it.
