    xxxHolic

So, I picked up the first DVD a couple of days ago, and it was actually better than I expected it to be. It's a nice sort of slice-of-life anime about the occult. It's often quite clever, too... I love Yuuko's various philosophies about human nature and inevitability.

The only things I'd say bugged me were its wacky tendencies, and the character design. I'm sorry, but... seriously? They're inhumanly tall. It's actually very disturbing. It creates some really weird moments art-wise, too.

But it's still a good show.

I haven't seen or read any of this. But I have read like, all the Tsubasa that's out and seen one of the movies and some of the show. The two crossover quite a lot, especially near the end so I've been thinking about reading this.

I probably would just read it over watching it, because I'm sure the anime isn't as good, but I'm curious as to what you think of the soundtrack? From what I've seen of Tsubasa, it had a pretty good soundtrack to it.

It tends to avoid music, preferring to go with an air of diagetic noise instead. But what music they do use is very good. Especially the OP.

And while I haven't seen Tsubasa, i've heard xxxHolic is considerably better.

I haven't checked out the anime myself since I've been happy with just reading the manga, but do you know if it deviates much from it? I know there's a couple of OVAs and I think a movie or two that I wanna check out if not the actual anime episodes.

I've not read the manga, though i've heard the manga is better. I plan to pick it up, but my local Waterstones never has volume 1 in.

I read a bit of the manga, since there's no more Liar Game for me to read. =(

I'll probably like it less than Tsubasa, since from what I've read it seems like there'll be a lot more comic relief and wacky anime expressions. However, it still should be interesting to see some of the stuff going on in the background. There's already been a bit of foreshadowing in the first or second chapter, pertaining to the card captor rod thing. Also, near the end Tsubasa suddenly becomes extremely dark, so I imagine around that time xxxHolic will get a much more serious tone.

Yeah, but in this it just feels out of place, much in the same way it did with Fullmetal Alchemist.

I liked it in Fullmetal Alchemist. It kept it from getting too serious, allowing it to have serious content while not continuing to stay a "light" read.

But that's a discussion for another place. :P

Ah, the comic relief seems to be an early thing. If the anime follows the manga, there's lots of drama, angst and dark stuff to come with little comic relief ;D

I love XXXHolic. Definitely a good series for me. And I like how it ties in with Tsubasa.

Actually, one of my worries for xxxHOLiC was that I didn't read TRC, so I thought I'd be out of the loop, and granted there are a few scenes I didn't quite get, but over-all this story has it's own thing going on. Newbs to CLAMP could get away with just reading this I think *rubs chin*

I don't think not reading one will make it hard to understand the other, though there might be references to the other manga you won't get. I think that reading both would would enhance the experience, but isn't a necessity in the least.

Perhaps I should look into this. Every time I attempt to pick up the manga or watch the anime, I can't bring myself to do it. I'm afraid it's gonna suck too much.
