    Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

NOTE: This post is mostly Recycled Human's, and all material relating to the RP is currently his own. Doaj (myself) will be periodically updating this post as things progress through the RP. I have permission from Recycled Human to reboot 'Noise', much to my excitement, and I hope that we can have tons of fun.

    N - O - I - S - E
    Battle - Oriented - Role - Play
    - Experiment

    Words To Know:

    Exemplar:
The inner fighting spirit, a handful have learned to harness this weapon and physically materialize it. Induced by states of desperation or when the user is overcome by specific emotions, the user pilot’s this other self while their own bodies become statuesque. Stuck in whatever state the pilot was last in. An exemplar can be anything, from animal to abstract to humanoid.

    Pilot:
A pilot is one of the rare upworlders who can create physical representations of themselves and control directly the consciousness of the new being.

    Jockey:
A pilot who refuses to leave their Exemplar’s body.

    Living Metal:
A robotic entity first crafted by human hand, capable of working directly with any substance it comes in contact with, giving a semi-liquid consistency that bends eagerly. There are many different types but most have developed a hive mentality and therefore conform to the will of a Controller. It is said to have developed a consciousness of its own and though some worship it, the entity itself seems content to go about rudimentary tasks and just do whatever the Controller instructs it to do.

Setting: A futuristic ruined world that licenses out rare talented individuals to compete in tournaments for the amusement of an underground civilization. The promise of paradise is the only prize. The pay sucks, the hours are long and the environment is the second most dangerous place on the planet. The first being your hometown.

    Locations & Battlefields:

    Underdome:
All characters will start in the Underground Arena. An entire coliseum built on the outskirts of ‘Fountain’. Though the massive structure appears to be made from white brick and mortar, it is actually a substantially durable alloy capable of withstanding the heat from the radioactive isotopes still active within the earth’s core. To view it from a distance one would assume it was the Roman equivalent turned upside down, with the open top of the massive structure actually a series of cameras and lights sandwiched between sturdy, heat resistance polymer. The interior boasts seating by the millions cordoned off in six separate boxes representing the Fountain crest of the hexagon, it features a multitude of ‘pop-in’ terrain that can be switched on the fly by the Director. At any given time there may be any number of banners strung about the sides of each box representing crowd favorites coupled by cheers and jeers for each favored combatant.

Routinely New Inductees will be taken to a Framework Grid, literally a skeletal black on blue landscape intended for both bonding the Pilot to their Exemplar and charting out their current attributes to be recorded in an ever evolving personal file. The Grid is designed to remove all outside interference and tends to take place on the sidelines of any given match in an outing not unlike a baseball dugout.

Wildlife found in the arena is generated by the same Living Metal responsible for upkeep and operations, though they aren’t the real thing expect them to be just as lethal. This goes equally for any of the plant-life and terrain conditions. It is expected that each combatant view their home away from home as more than a Virtual Reality.

    Fountain of Youth:
Touting itself as the first paradise of earth, Fountain of Youth is the fast pace world beneath our world. It was designed for us after the near-nuclear fallout of our previous generations, their heavy warring driving the civilized world into hiding. This city is run and operated by Living Metal, a self sustaining hive-like entity that propitiates life underground. The city operates without the citizens needing to work. Crime rate is a growing concern for the tenuous government but with the advent of the arena most are content to just watch the blood sports. The city itself is a spectacle of lights and sounds, tunnels and tall buildings.

    Noise:
There is a reward for those with the gift. Everyone knows about it, blowing the whistle on a pilot results in three months of rations. The city of Noise is a mish-mash of ruined sky scrappers, deserted complexes and downed air liners. There is no system of government though the unwanted citizens of Fountain have formed an alliance in the hopes of establishing commerce. Their principle trading stock relies on a constant supply of Pilots. Anyone found with the gift would usually be whisked away by bounty hunters into the buried metropolis where some of the old technology still works. Subject to constant raids from local monsters and roaming wasteland gangs, Noise is considered the most dangerous place on earth.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    So Why Do We Fight?

    Conflict:
What do you get for the citizen that has everything? Why, entertainment of course. And that’s all Noise has to offer, a constant slug fest of flesh against flesh, blood spilling, gut wrenching and bone splitting entertainment. Well, kind of. In the years following the near-nuclear fallout of prior generations, odd mutations have begun to well up in unsuspecting survivors. For the select few suffering a reaction from the material they possess the inner fortitude to make their dreams a reality and in some cases, control them. Though not entirely real, each Pilot can draft an Exemplar of themselves to interact with the physical world surrounding them. Though most were surprised when their inner spirit revealed themselves none were quite as surprised when those physical incarnations shared real pain back to the owner’s bodies. Now, there’s only one thing to do with an Exemplar and it’s Pilot. And that’s to force them all to fight!

    A Final Note & Sign-Ups:

This Role Play is dedicated to battle. It rewards creativity and guile while honing personal style and teamwork. It ostracizes the cancer of romance while providing for budding relationships among its participants. All of this is achieved by my Stat progression system. And once you’ve experienced the difficult yet rewarding process for yourself, I feel you will enjoy fighting as much as I enjoy crafting this world.

This Role Play will be using Involved Tags. At the end of every post you should include a reference to which players (username : character) were involved. Most on this forum should be familiar with it so see the actual role play for examples.

If you choose to sign up, all you have to do is decide a character you want to play. It can be yourself, someone you know or even one of your own creations. From there, I want you to ask yourself a simple question:
"If they were forced to fight, how would they do it?" Once you have a general idea in mind. Fill out this form:

    Exemplar Name:
    Stage Names:
    Weapon:

    Combat Style:
    Appearance:
    Personality:

Just to be clear, you will be signing up your Exemplar at first. It’s good to have a concept ready for the pilot but things can change. In this way, I’m hoping people will have the time required to both put finishing touches on their main character and find out all there is to know about this new and exciting atmosphere.

// My character as an example sign up //

    Exemplar Name : Abigail Annetta
    Stage Name : Nives
    Race : Human
Weapon : Knives, Daggers and short swords

Abilities : Uses superior speed and knife handling skill to subdue her opponents. Relies on animalistic instincts akin to a wolf stalking its prey. Through sheer emotional rage or determination she can increase the durability of her blades making it possible to cut through almost anything. This requires an extreme emotional state and is therefore uncontrollable.

Personality : Abigail is a very loyal girl, to those who’ve earned her respect she shows a deep emotional understanding and a sweet, almost motherly display of concern. To the rest of the world she’s a cruel, calculating bitch. Displaying only one emotion : Righteous Fury. Though her outside demeanor appears steady and controlled, her inner turmoil fervor's between insanity and brilliance. Her aggression is tempered only by justice being served, in whatever form that may take. Considering that most of her first encounters are made at knife point it’s hard to see the cubs beyond the bear.

    Appearance :
Abigail is all about functionality, her choices in everything from clothing to hairstyle is meticulously selected and specifically weighted by a series of pro’s and con’s. Her purple hair is long enough in the front to minimize a round, cutesy face yet short enough to not get unnecessarily tangled or create any blind spots during rigorous exertion. To the same effect, she chose a fashion that would still be considered attractive in the event that she may require a woman’s guile. Her almond shaped eyes are covered by a thin contact that changes her naturally dull brown eye color to an ensemble matching shade of bright purple. The umbrella of her pencil thin asymmetrical eyebrows sit placidly at the base of her forehead giving her a look of feline mischief. If anyone could see her nose however, they would find it betrays her finickiness. The button shape makes her seem innocent, so while in combat she tends to wear a white nose guard that fastens behind her head. If asked she would probably reply ‘I cut it off, despite me.’ She stands at an average 5’7 and has an athletic build. Abigail wears a tight fitting purple and black jumpsuit complete with several loops and pockets with buttons for disposing of her more deadly accessories.

Expect something from me soon. I look forward to this, but today is not the day that I write something out. Really cool though- you've completely organized the RPB of the site, without restricting it at all. Brilliant, sir.

  3. #3
Glad to hear it Doaj. Just another note, there is no approval here. You post up your character and as soon as I start the RP (should happen shortly) you will be able to post.

The first match is going to be a group effort, the moment you are sent your confirmation pm along with your awarded points you can begin interacting with other members as they arrive. The porticullis won't release your first opponents until two weeks from the day I start the RP.

Just as a preview of some of the things buzzing around :

Doubles Match - you will be paired up with a random combatant and forced to fight in the arena. I'm considering having participants handcuffed (gladiator).

Thumbs up or thumbs down - Matches will be given a limit where the victor will be decided. I might run a poll where other members of the forum can participate by voicing their opinions about their favorite combatants.

Survival round - two combatants enter and must fight waves of npcs, the one with the highest kill count wins. Kills subject to approval.

RPB has never been my forte, but I did have fun doing my Yukio RPB with you, so I might be interested in giving this a go. I'd be interested in doing one of the limited battles, so there would only be a few posts required. [Otherwise I wouldn't be able to commit enough time to it. =(]

I'll most definitely join this; I only need to think of a good character to do it with. Give me some time to come up with one and then I'm ready to kick ass and take names.

  6. #6
Just a tip, your character doesn't have to be bad ass. They will grow and change over time. You will be awarded more stat points for creativity (Abigail is not an example of creativity...that's more like an average to uncreative character. I will be awarding myself less points than everyone else).

For those of you with a time crunch I will be initiating a random sickness that causes the pilot to abruptly faint from mental exertion. In this way an abrupt stop won't seem so out of the ordinary. You or whomever you are involved with can simply alert me to the need and I will allow a sudden faint to keep the gameplay going.

Also, for those who don't like battle you will be allowed to role play a side story about trying to escape capture. However combat is still the only way to get stronger...

    Bump

    IC up : here

    Instructions :

    1) Sign up your Exemplar using the format provided in the first post of this topic

    2) Post your introduction in the In Character.
-You will be awarded stat points (which don't mean much now but they will) based on your creativity. In order to showcase that you could say I fabricated my own 'RPoTW'. Your Exemplar is transported to a six by nine grid and has complete GM control of every aspect of it.
-In the five minutes you are allotted you may do anything you like but you MUST have your Exemplar using their hands/feet/body/tentacles whathaveyou, they must hear several different sounds from different locations and they must see something moving back and forth, up and down.
-You can describe how you got to the underground complex before going to Grid*

    3) You will receive a confirmation PM from me that will include your characters score and some instruction on spending the points as well as a bit of dialogue from me where we can discuss your character.
-Don't be alarmed, this is only one of MANY different creativity awards. I will probably be giving anywhere from 1-5 bonus stat points for this introduction.

    4) After receiving your confirmation PM you may begin posting in the Role Play. There is a schedule allotted for this that gives you ample time to post while informing you of upcoming events.

*though I suggest leaving that for after you receive your confirmation pm

You must be getting really annoyed with me by now, but I promise I will sign up for this asap! I just have to get these exams over with and then I should be able to find the time to make up a good character.

    Sorry for the delay!

No big deal. Actually with my insider knowledge I'm probably going to put this on hold untill the dust settles. Since no ones signed up I figure no feelings will be hurt. But there is still a few days left before I just freeze this.

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

Now I really do have to warn you: this Exemplar bio might be completely against the rules and impossible to grade in any way. However, the idea popped into my head and I just NEEDED to write it down. If you think this is impossible to implement in the RPB, tell me and I'll come up with something else, and I will keep this gem ready to use in any other RP.

If this CAN be implemented into Noise, then WOOHOO.

    ----------

    Exemplar Name: Aco Birdsong

    Stage Names: Gambler, or Cards

    Weapons:
    King - A sword
    Jack - A shovel
    Queen - A wand
    Joker - Sharp wits
    Low cards - Whoops
    Ace - Try again
10 of Hearts - None. Does not fight.

Abilities - Say what?! Yes, Gambler has a few cards up his sleeve. A whole deck, in fact. Gambler is lucky, and often pulls the right cards. Still, the suspense is tangible everytime he turns over the card; which one shall it be? Gambler has been known to pull multiple cards in one single game, but he tries to avoid this as much as possible. Not only is there a considerable chance he will pull a card that will be detrimental to his success, the act of switching to the card's persona leaves him disoriented for a second or two, sometimes even ending up upside-down or sideways, depending on how he holds the card when he pulls it out of the deck. In the heat of battle, these seconds can and will be lethal.

    Combat Style:
King - King is large (over 6ft) , strong and wields his two-handed sword with confidence. He is nigh immobile, preferring to wait until the enemy comes to him.
Jack - Jack is shorter and wields a shovel. A shovel might not seem much of a weapon, until it hits you in the face. Jack is faster than King, and is able to endure more. He is more aggressive and actually actively attacks his opponents, but since his weapon is not actually built as a weapon, he does not pose as serious a threat as King does.
Queen - Queen is frail, and keeps as far away from battle as possible. She uses basic spells to defend herself and to attack (most notably a thin veil of about 4 square meters that dissipates in a few seconds, and a thin bolt of ethereal energy that travels about as fast as an arrow but is prone to sway, respectively). She actively seeks to avoid close combat as she cannot take much damage.
Joker - Dances and hops and grins and laughs and makes funny faces. His most dangerous weapon is his scathing wit and his ability to make the audience like him. His bitch-slaps are more insulting than dangerous. The Joker's only forte is his speed and unpredictable nature.
Low cards - A small boy lies in a fetal position, crying. No fighting takes place. Pull another card, quickly!
Ace - This makes Gambler smile. He can now assume the guise he prefers for the upcoming battle.
10 of Hearts - Does not fight. Is not included in pack.

    Appearance:
King - Large, bulky, huge beard and a crown on his head. A white fur cloak rests on his shoulders, and a long two-handed sword inlaid with rubies is a thinly veiled manacing threat.
Jack - A farmer. Weathered skin from the years he spent outdoors. His shovel looks as if it has seen better days. Soil clings to his sturdy boots. His trousers are frayed at the cuffs, and his shirt is bleached by the sun. A thick moustache addorns his upper lip.
Queen - Queen is a thin, frail woman in her late twenties. Light and exquisite fabrics swirl around her as if they're weightless. Her nearly white hair floats around her pale face.
Joker - A motley jesters' costume and a painted face that is always grinning devilishly. His clothes have bells that tingle merrily at every move he makes... and Joker makes many moves.
Low Cards - A small boy in white. Tubes come out of his body and disappear into nothing. Matted hair covers his face. Cries.
Ace - Any of the others. While deciding, Gambler looks a bit like everyone and like no one.
10 of Hearts - Does not fight. Dressed in an impeccable suit, shoes gleaming almost as much as his eyes and smile. A silver ring is the only bit of jewelry he wears.

    Personality:
King - Honourable and authorative. Prefers to defend.
Jack - Honest and hard-working, and very aggressive when angry.
Queen - Frightful and silent. Prefers to stay out of conflicts.
Joker - Never serious. Merry and cheerful but always at the cost of other people.
Low cards - Obviously quite timid and rather depressed. Now leave that kid alone and pull another card!
Ace - Distant and absent. Has no clear opinions or ideas. In transition.
10 of Hearts - Passionate and cheerful, and always looking for a fun time. He never takes part in a battle, and put his card in his sleeve to be sure he never appears in the Arena. After all, there should be someone to represent the 'Team' outside of the Arena, right? And why should that not be him, the most well-dressed, well-mannered, well-spoken and well-informed person of the entire deck?

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

    Pilot Name: Blank Polo
Exemplar Name : Paco de Maullo
    Stage Name : The Lizardman
    Race : Lizardman
Weapon : Paco has always been keen on the old-school gladiator style of war and fighting. He's left-handed, carrying a large scimitar in his left hand, the blade constantly sharp. In his right hand is a basic shield, strapped with two leather bands, one across his palm, and the other his forearm. The shield is very round, and in fair light can be reflective, allowing de Maullo to deflect a handful of spells if he has enough time to prepare and aim a block. In particularly close quarters, de Maullo's razor sharp teeth and ragged claws are enough to shred an unsuspecting victim with ease. His tail is also quite powerful, and he has full control over it, able to constrict opponents, and can crush smaller bones, like wrists and ankles. Calves and shoulders can take the strength without snapping, but will certainly be bruised and damaged.

Abilities : Being a lizardman, de Maullo isn't known for his wide array of magic, and he is certain it will be his downfall. However, he has small magical properties related to his kind, such as that his limbs will regrow within an hour of losing them, his tail can regrow faster, within fifteen to twenty minutes. Being reptilian, his skin is layered in small scales, which are difficult to pierce with blades, although highly susceptible to cold and ice. If he were cold for a prolonged amount of time, he would quickly freeze to death because he's cold-blooded. A natural defense to this is a small amount of fire magic. De Maullo can heat himself for about ten minutes consistently, or make one small burst of flame. Either would completely deplete him of magical abilities for several days.

Personality : Paco de Maullo was a born traveler. He get's this from his Exemplar, Blank. However, his battle tactic and unique fearlessness are his own. Paco de Maullo loves to see the world, and feels a certain joy when he visits somewhere he's seen before, but it pales in comparison to the love of seeing somewhere brand new. This is one reason he loves to fight in Noise; and more specifically win. Every time Paco de Maullo comes out on top, he knows he'll get another visit to 'The Rabbit Hole'. He gets to see a new place- France, Belgium, Brazil, Belize, Australia, Egypt- Paco plans on seeing every location on his list, and the list is long.

Very exciting stuff. Are you saying that the lizardman loves travel because his pilot loves travel? I like the concept and can't wait to see what other parallels are in store for both pilot and exmplar.

The same goes to you aleister, 10 of hearts has already started out as a fun character. I would love to see what type of pilot cooked up the cards!

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

So, I have a question. Say, Aleister Black and I are pitted against one another. Now, it looks to me like he put a lot of work into his character. It's creative, inventive, and has a lot of potential. Personally, I like my character as well. I've always been fond of lizardmen, and this was a real opportunity to play one. I've also never played a character like this before. So, we fight. It's intense. Bitches are hollerin' from the sidelines and flashing their titties because we're so awesome. And then, one of us wins. A win means that the loser died. This is fact, yes? So, seeing as there are only three of us at the moment, and we each have one character that we put dedication into, is that character simply dead and gone? What's the ruling on that?

Also, I'm not 100% clear on what's going on in the RP at the moment. We each went through our Rabbit Hole thingy, so will we just wait for a battle, or were you doing that group vs. NPC match first?

Hope my questions don't drive you up the wall and back.

  16. #16

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

Up a wall? No. Into a wall? Thats a bit more accurate. I have this problem of knowing what I mean but failing to express it.

First, I have no intention of killing your character off. The only Exemplar v. Exemplar 'kills' will be based on several factors, a crowd approval/disapproval rating (based on peer input and personal favor), the consent of the one to be killed and the consent of the one to do the killing. This offers a choice to outsiders/guests/clans/guilds whathaveyou to cheer or jeer on their combatants, and a choice to both the one being killed and the one doing the killing. Each choice offers penalties and benefits that will reveal themselves in the form of coin, favor and Attribute points (there will never be a penalty to Attributes but there may be one to coin and certainly one to favor).

Coins are the currency of Noise, they can be used to purchase items, goods, weapons and arms for your Exemplar.
-Winning a match, completing a challenge and certain npc drops will all increase coin.
-Cheating death, going against a ruling, losing certain challenges and certain player skills will cause you to lose coins.

The original ultimate goal is to win enough favor to be accepted into Fountain.
-Winning a match, winning over popular opinion and going along with rulings will increase favor.
-Losing a match, becoming hated and going against rulings (unless the crowd still favors you) will lose favor.

Attribute points are the measures of personal growth in combat for your Exemplars.
-Winning a match, being creative and participating in events will increase your Attribute Points.
-Nothing Decreases Attribute Points. I may offer an item that allows you to reset your assigned attributes in accordance with popular opinion.

Thanks to this question I came up with this :

If your character is felled on the battlefield your pilot will suffer from a Severe Sickness that will cost them a battle period (each period lasting about a week unless specifically endorsed), during this week you will only be able to act as your Pilot. The only exception to this rule will be events. Should an event start during your week out you will be granted a reprieve and allowed to participate in the event (again unless specifically prohibited. Should one of the match stipulations be 'loser must forfeit an event'.)

What is an Event? Events are specially hosted encounters in the Coliseum that provide a wide scale battle that offers higher rewards than normal. For starters, everyone who participates is automatically granted bonus Attribute Points. Some have high coin payouts and others offer extreme favor. I will eventually open Events up to the public so that anyone can create the monthly/bimonthly events (whatever the case may be).

After the week off, your Exemplar will be allowed to rejoin the battles.

As for what's going on in the RP, we are currently in the 'joining' phase where people who post in time will be allowed to participate in the first Event. This will provide you with a bonus in Attribute points and overall winner will be granted a chance to vet their pilot (A Veteran is like a mentor to other pilots, they have increased physical and mental resistance allowing them to exhibit longer than normal time in their Exemplar, they also have the Role Play element of being top dogs to all the new recruits).

Once the joining phase is concluded (tomorrow) all combatants (three so far) will be allowed to participate in the Event. The Event will put Players against several difficult opponents but don't forget, this is an open battle you can attack other players if you wish. Of course, once I explain the battle system you may think twice about it as doing so would leave you open to NPC attacks and yes NPCs CAN knock you out. The choices will still all be yours.

This Event was intended as an opener to break the ice on this RP, it also provides Role Play possibilities as we have not fully fleshed out our Pilots yet. I've got a lot of stuff to do for tomorrow so expect PMs from me soon!

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

I also have some questions, just for clear up. So these "Exemplars" are tangible mental projections of the Pilot? But it also seems that the Exemplars are separate sentient entities. Explain?

  18. #18

Re: Noise: Sign Up & Discussion

Excellent question, Exemplar's are the 'role' in a Role Play for the pilots. They are based off of the inner fighting spirit of the Pilots and are brought into a physical manifestation. The Pilots control the Exemplar's exactly like they would control their own bodies only they must act within accordance to the mental parameters exhibited by their 'inner self'. Shouldn't be too hard, arguably this form is the 'true self'. This is brought into a state of stasis through the pairing of Pilot to Exemplar.

The distinction between the 'seemingly' separate entities is based on the masks (or hats) forced upon us by societal norms. This will explain why a calm, sweet, innocent girl pilot might have a crude, bloodthirsty, evil Exemplar.

Hopefully that doesn't confuse things further...my original concept was to provide a role play within a role play to provide for a more enjoyable battle experience.

I think I get it. Thanks.

I checked this RP out at Doaj's behest. And now, I must say I'm pretty excited about it. I'll post a profile shortly.

EDIT: Also, Aleister's character is awesome. xD

Glad to see it. Thank you Doaj! And thank you Black Jack for taking interest I hope you join! Don't feel rushed by the event either just let me know if you need more time. I will most likely still have the event start as scheduled but I will allow for late arrivals in this particular bout.
