The Scars We Bear, The Medals We Wear

We are the roleplay veterans. We have pushed through all ups and downs there is to be had in the worlds of role play. We are the few, we are the proud. We are the creative, the conflicting, the resolving, the cooperating writers of our generation. We strive to push the boundaries of co-authoring, of character development, of battling dynamics. We take our experiences in stride, whether good or bad. We wear our scars and medals with honor and carry the memories of our endeavors with us in countless Notepad and Word documents to recount our struggles in imaginative brainstorming!!

So tell me... Just what sort of encounters have you had in your time as a roleplayer?

What is the best moment you've had as an RPer? A resounding moment in the story? Perhaps your creation of the perfect character overall? How about when you fell in love with a fellow RPer? Or did it just feel like it within the story?

What is the worst moment you've had? Did no one in the RP get along at all? Did the GM just have an insane power trip that you couldn't even stand reading their user name without going into a fit of indignant rage? Did you, unfortunately, lose your number one character in the world to an evil ploy within the storyline? Had you lost a friendship over some kind of scuffle because of an RP?

What's the weirdest thing that's happened to you in an RP? Did your character's lover turn out to be the opposite sex in a past life? Did you find out that one of your favorite RP partners is in the same Physics class as you are?

You don't have to divulge all aspects of your roleplaying experiences. But if you do have something interesting that you wouldn't mind getting out for everyone to see. Share with me! Share with us!!

    As for me... Hmn.

I had a sort of weird moment in RPing during a supernatural RP I had joined a long time ago. In essence, each player was to have a counterpart in the RP. A Demon was to be paired with a Hunter. As I joined, I took a demon role. I posted and awaited someone to jump in as my hunter counterpart. Others seemed sensible enough to join with a friend to take on the specific roles together. As I waited, I kind of developed a deeper back story to my character than what I had initially come up with. I developed a second demonic character as a way to perhaps deepen the dynamic between my initial demon and the prospective hunter. As I continued to wait, I proceeded to create the dynamic with my character and this NPC. There was unfortunately no takers to my counterpart role and those who had already joined into the RP seemed to see it more prudent to overlook my character entirely.

So, in the end, I had been RPing with myself the entire time I was a part of this large RP. Incredibly odd turn of events I didn't see coming.
But, I suppose the up side to this tale is that I managed to fall in love with the two characters I had formed in this process and their story and even still have the posts today.

I've had many moments in my RP lifespan that I would consider golden. I had met one of my closest and dearest friends through RP and I would like to think that the story that we shared between us was one of my most successful - even if it never had the chance to see an end. (But, oh, the plans we had for such an end!) [Kevin, I love you and miss you so!]

Other successes I can think of are one story I shared with another good friend and, though we RPed for nearly a year, the story progression was rather slow. Our journey had hardly even begun. But this was merely due to the fact that we enjoyed our characters and exploring their interactions and developing their dynamics between them all. One that has also not reached an end - but, Life permitting, perhaps we may yet be able to continue it.

And, of course, I wouldn't possibly think of bringing up these successes without listing the current grand endeavor with everyone's favorite Kendra. I list this as one of my greater successes simply for the fact that she had slotted herself into my life as a great beacon of hope when I had nigh given up any last bit I had in regards to finding someone who had the slightest inkling about what I was talking about should I mention "Peter and the Wolf." And, naturally, the girl has yet to cease to impress. So that goes under the list with a big fat, "HELL YEAH!"

Worst RP moments? My policy is generally a trial-by-error sort of basis. I was just as bad as the next n00b when it came to beginnings; script RPing, those gawd awful action indicators that haunt me so. (Obviously, I pick the worst set to run with - " ::ACTION:: ")

Though, I would have to say one of my sadder moments are when I decided to cut the chord and stop RPing for a while. My original haven had long devolved into a hot mess of puberty and the resulting hormone rush. Most of my roleplay comrades had long abandoned it and left me with little alternative to do the same. Barring two - and eventually one - RP partner, I no longer had the solidarity I built in RP with strong partners. And after roughly 2-3 years RPing with my "last resort" the inspiration started to run dry as did the draw to the stories we had developed. My writing drive had plummeted and the creative gears began to halt. It was a dark day indeed when I finally swore off RPing. It's only been recently that I've picked it up again, a big thanks to Kendra.

A second outstanding "failure" would be the first attempt at GMing an RP. I had originally roped my brother, his friend, and a friend of my own into a slightly intimate story for the sake of practice with comfortable folk. However, once set into motion, this seemed to be the perfect time for my friend to bail on me nigh completely. After his apparent disappearance, my brother and his friend soon followed suit and the chances at getting a GM groove were dashed. //// I have begun an attempt at "try, try again" here at RSF, but - no offense to doaj and Dew, you are both so fabulous for keeping with me and being SOO very patient - I am unsure about the success even a second time.

(Nevertheless, boys, I promised a start for the two of you and a start you shall have. Though, there may be a slight bit of discussion in the OOC before hand. /End Digression)

Now I'm an open book for everyone to read. xDD

Well, the best moment(s) is easy for me. I remember always blatantly ignoring the RP section at Blootix. I thought it was relevant to the RPG at Blootix, and because I didn't participate in that, why bother taking a glance? And then, in a passing comment, (I'd been at the site around a year at this point) my interest was piqued. "My character got eaten by zombies in my RP." It said in the shoutbox (or something strange). "Wait," I said. "There are zombies in the RPG?" I was then told the difference between RP'ing and RPGs. I felt so foolish. (I was also like fourteen? Fifteen?)

So, after talking to a few RPers at the site, I learned that there weren't any active, open RPs. Just a couple closed ones that had been in the works for too long for me to jump in, being a complete novice. I decided if I were going to try something new, then I'd dive right in. The water was icy cold, and I had no idea where I was going. Nonetheless, I ended up with maybe 6 or 7 participants, and the going was fast. We hit more than ten pages in the first month, and by two months we were at like 17. I thought, "This must be how all RPs are! Holy fucking shit, batman!" I was transfixed with it. Then, someone new joined. He'd been around the forum, but his character didn't seem like he fit the genre very well. I figured, he knew better than I, and so I approved him. Less than a week later, the RP was pronounced dead. He slayed it with his heavily armored warrior who doesn't die. D= Nonetheless, it was so much fun while it lasted.

In Kendra related news, my first RP with her was random. Blootix had closed, and I joined RPAnime. Horrid site. Too many Mudkips (I'm not lying. They were absolutely obsessed with mudkips). It was not as RP related as I had hoped. Someone there, though, linked my to an RP that was absolutely of epic proportion. God had created a second world. There were levels dividing the social classes, in an almost Hindu caste system. I felt like I was playing with some real professionals here. I was intimidated, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to keep up. I wanted to join, but I didn't want to drag them down. I got the nerve, and I posted a character. Nothing happened for about a week, and then I was approved by the GM: Contra Fates. Even her name sounded too professional for me. It screamed, "You're gonna suck my dick until you die if you ruin my role-play, newbie!" After like a week, that impression was gone(not the professionalism, but definitely the sexual, violent undertones. =D Anyway, it ran well, and while chatting with Kendra she mentioned that she was done with the RP. She wanted to start a new one. I got an idea. If you recall the world she created, then you know it was built in levels, one social class literally above the other. My idea resulted in the death of the entire population. Being the leader of a terrorist organization, I asked her if I could blow up the foundation of the levels, causing it all to literally fall in on itself? Her reply was simply, "Sure."

    And it was done.

Probably my first run through of my "Sins and Virtues" RP. It didn't exactly excel here, but it had a better run this time around. The first time, I convinced someone who had left Blootix due to quarrels to come back. I heard she was a good RPer, so why not? She joined the RP, and even brought two of her friends in on it. One in particularly wrote impressively well, so I was excited for their inclusion.

    At first.

After probably three or four days, Dae (who we all know and love) posted something pretty offensive and lewd. I felt it was within reason; after all, her character was lust. This girl I invited though- she was livid. She wanted me to kick Dae out of the RP, to make her apologize, and to keep everyone else in reasonable (by her definition) boundaries. Yah fucking right. I told her I'd go along with it, but I lied. Instead, I told Dae to rape her character vividly, and she did. She also left the site, and took her friends with her.

Eventually, I talked her into returning to the site. I offended her again when, in a story I was writing featuring all of the members of the site, I wrote her character in as a slut, going off with two or three male members for a gangbang. Yah. Then she left, and she never came back.

Probably what happened above. Besides a couple of particular incidents, most unfortunate occurrences are simply when an RP dies before it ever starts. I might think of something though, so I'll surely be posting again.

I look forward to it, SS. Actually, quite a bit. And I was hoping for another post. I don't remember if you answered my question or not (or maybe I forgot to ask it. I'll go have a look-see).

    That's awesome, doaj!
My brain isn't designed for working that smart when it comes to RPs. But that's some pretty wicked stuff! I would definitely call that a win!

    And talk about awkward too. o_o;;
I don't think I've ever gone that far. I mean, I can do some vulgar stuff, but to be so direct about it... Eeeh, not so much.

    As for your post in the OOC, yes. I need to head over there to address that as well as the RP itself.. Apologies for not getting to it much sooner. I've been on a quest to find me a ladder tall enough to get me out of the GM-PHAIL hole I seem to have dug myself into. o_o;;

What is the best moment you've had as an RPer?
Tough. I will still have to answer that my first time RPing was the best, even though I think that I have participated in qualitatively better RPs since then. Still, I think there are several shared moments because it is simply impossible for me to actually point out the single best moment ever in an RP.

My first RP was one I will always remember (Aleister Black being my first character I ever made and still one of my most favourite) because it was just so epic and it was my first time delving into this treasury of epic moments, too. The post in which Aleister frees Seraphim (Contra Fates) from Gunter's grasp is still one I am pretty proud of.

But it would be amiss if I were to leave out the Aristocracy RP and my character Fiacre Amadour. His first post is also one I'm very proud of and even though the character had been roughly pre-made, I found I could still put a lot into it. Oh, the things I had planned for him...

Thomas and Tonberry fusing with Pandemona is also a moment that will stick with me for quite a while. I just loved writing that, and all subsequent posts as well.

What is the worst moment you've had?
Well, my worst period in RPing was most likely when I tried my luck at the RPGateway. That first RP had died and I had lost track of everyone in it. I wanted to sate my hunger for RPing and thought that surely such a large community would be able to fill me right up. Boy, was I wrong. About 90% of the RPs never seem to reach beyond page 1 and the ones that do go so fast that it is impossible to keep track of them. Add to that mix a few bitching people in the chatbox who can't take a joke, and you'll find that I left the place faster than you can say 'I hate this place'.

Fortunately, I ran into Kendra on Deviantart (I don't even know how that happened anymore) and from there on she dragged me into several sites, and eventually this one.

What's the weirdest thing that's happened to you in an RP?
Weird? I don't know if I ever really had a decidedly weird moment in any RP. :/ Maybe when playing with some people who wouldn't recignise a logical decision when it was dancing naked in front of them and as a result had their characters do really strange and unlogical things, but nothing weird in particular.
