I did want to see this, but...
Seeing how it scored .5/4 stars with Roger Ebert, currently 5% on Rotten Tomatoes, and now it being said here that it's awful, I think I've been turned off from it.
Yeah, I heard Rotten Tomatoes currently has this listed at 8% favourable. =/
I've read a few reviews and people seem to think he's just using the story to make a glorified CGI kung fu flick.
Can we stop doing live-action remakes now? Please? D=
Seriously, I wish they would stop. What's sad is that M. Night was an actual FAN of the show, and even as a fan...he totally botched it. What's even worse is that the original creators even helped with the script - so the screenplay failures were also on them, as well. You just can't condense about 8 hours of a show into an hour and a half. But, my main qualm was just how flat, EVERYONE was. There wasn't a single character who had a personality - and the name changes and other alterations just served to drive me mad.

I am a hugely anti-Twilight person...and I'd have rather sat through all of the Twilight films thus far than watch TLA.

Apparently there's some sort of ad on UW campus to boycott this movie. o.o
I think they're boycotting because it's 'racist,' not because it sucks. xD

I can't even think of 9% of the film that I liked, so even that's too nice!

XD I didn't see the ad personally, just heard that there was one, so I didn't know exactly why they were boycotting it.
It's generally pretty bad when people want to boycott a film for any reason.
Racism sucks. SO IT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE MOVIE SUCKING BECAUSE IT'S APPARENTLY RACIST.
XD
Bad casting ftl.
I can't believe that statement about twilight....my mind just doesn't allow me to, it's impossible...really impossible for my mind to assimilate it.
The 9%....maybe the special effects?
That said...
I've never seen Twilight, so, chances are...I'll probably just want to hang myself after watching that...just as much as I did after watching TLA.
Also, that video was amazing. xD

Haha, yeah, it is pretty bad. I really didn't think that the film was racist at all, it was just...bad.
1.) Designs: Compared to other live action versions of cartoons / anime, this one actually kept pretty true. Aang and Yue probably looked the best, and the scenery was almost identical to the show. Despite race changes, I still think this was the closest animation-to-live-action adaptation I've seen when it came to character and scenery designs.
2.) Special Effects: The special effects were very well done. The fire looked like fire, the water bending looked real, as did the air and earth bending. The creatures were also very well animated.
The Bad:
1.) Running Time: If you're going to condense about 8 hours of a show into 1 and a half, you'd better expect to butcher it completely. I feel that TLA could have been done a lot better if there were about 30 extra minutes with which M. Night could have utilized to better showcase the storyline.
2.) No Personality: Did you love Avatar for it's humorous yet well rounded and engaging characters? Well, unfortunately, M. Night didn't think that was an important thing. Every single character has absolutely no personality to speak of. Instead of Sokka being humorous, sexist, courageous, and cocky...he is down-trodden, depressed, and easily frustrated. Katara is also as disturbingly flat, all of her courage and willfulness is replaced by a girl who is obviously unsure of herself. Aang is not light-hearted and playful, but depressed throughout the -entire- film. His few smiles look as if he's just about to burst into tears. Iroh is not as comedic as he should be, and even Fire Lord Ozai, a character who shouldn't have even been seen throughout the entire movie - was perhaps the character to be altered the most.
3.) Obvious Zuko-Fanboys: You could tell that one major downfall for the movie was the fact that M. Night Shyamalan was a big fan of Zuko. Fire Lord Ozai actually -cares- about Zuko in the movie, by asking about him repeatedly and even suggesting that he'd be restored to the throne. Zuko is also not as obsessed and rage-filled as he should be, but is actually a rather likable understandable character. Unfortunately, this caused a lot of issues with the plot, and ruined a lot of possibly 'fun' scenes.
4.) The Actors: It's unfortunate just how terrible the acting was - and it really seemed to stem from the actors just being unsure and uncomfortable in their roles. Katara's actress was the absolute worst, and it seemed like she didn't even know what it was she was saying. Katara needed to be portrayed by a much more spirited and confident girl, and the girl who was cast for her just wasn't it. Jackson Rathbone was also a huge letdown. While I haven't seen him in Twilight, I remember him from an episode of Criminal Minds, and he was wonderful in it. For him to portray Sokka the way he did, I can only imagine that it was the way he was directed to do it.
5.) Pronunciation: Aang, Sokka, Iroh, and Agni kai were all pronounced differently than they were in the original show.
6.) 3D: I saw TLA during the midnight premiere in 3D, and it was an absolute letdown. You could tell that they did a big rush job, and the trailers before the movie were fifty times more impressive when it came to their use of 3D. TLA didn't even have the depth to it, it was very flat and two dimensional...and only a few minutes that I can recall even used 3D. It was obviously very gimmicky.
7.) Narrative: The biggest problem I had with the movie is it was portrayed as if you were reading pages in a book. M. Night felt the need to explain absolutely everything - instead of finding a way to explain things without sudden tear-filled monologues, or montages that were narrated by the dry-sounding Katara.
8.) Missed Opportunities: There were so many times in the movie where M. Night could have capitalized on a great scene. There could have been more combat scenes, there could have been some jokes, there could have been a more comedic battle, etc.
Bottom Line: When Yue, the worst character of the cartoon becomes the best character in the movie, you know someone messed up.
I could really go on and on about the faults with this movie, but those are enough for now.
I was all crazy excited to see this but then they released it a day early and I had a cold. I thought "No big deal I'll just wait a few days." All the reviews make me want to tearbend. I've noticed with my friends that the ones who watched the show hated it but the ones who had never seen it enjoyed the movie.
My sister and I were talking about the play episode yeasterday in reference to the movie. Yay for finding this!

I've also noticed that people who didn't see the show liked the movie. My friend couldn't stop raving about it, actually. I still want to see it because most complaints are the likes of "It's not funny anymore", but that's what I hated about the TV series. It would have been a great show if
A) It wasn't on Nick so that it could be less childish (The cop-out at the end when Aang magically neutralizes the evil guy's power was extremely dissapointing)
B) It wasn't plagued by terrible jokes that detracted from the seriousness.
That's why I had high hopes for this movie, as it appears much darker than the original series. Besides, reviewers never tend to agree with me anyway (*COUGH*TOOHUMAN*COUGH*).
I never actually watched the cartoon series, so I kind of want to watch the movie since I have no real expectations for it *rubs chin*
Hi, sorry about my lacking presence at RSF. I got busy with my off-line life, and though it's settled a bit, there's not much to do here without people posting (which is kind of my fault >.<)
The Last Air-bender cartoon show is one of my favorite show. When i hear about the movie, i hope that it will be amazing like the animation series but when i watch the movie that does not make be happy because it was not good as animation series. I hope the next part of the movie will be better than first part.
