    Well, for me, it was...

The death of Spike Spiegel. You wanted that guy to win, man. You just wanted to, and when he does, he just falls to the ground and dies, and you're like "Well FUCK, dude!"

I just finished Rurouni Kenshin the anime and the OVA. Dude WTF. How do you go from a funny anime to an OVA that makes you feel like crap. I'm really depressed right now.

Inversely, I loved the OVAs and hated the Rurouni Kenshin series. xD Samurai X was the original, and it was, in my opinion, much, much better.

To be on topic, I'm still sticking with my Gankutsuou death, because all the ones mentioned so far did -not- tear me up as much as that one did.

    Here's some more to add:
Dio from Last Exile. Man, I was so shocked when it happened. And, you really think the poor kid dies twice...so when he really does die, and the way he dies, just, ugh.

Any of the deaths from Samurai 7. Gorobei, Kyuzo, Heihachi, Kikuchiyo, they were all really sad. D= Of course it was all of my favorite characters that died.

I think I am the only one I know that didn't cheer Asuka's death.

For me, I think the most depressing death I've ever seen from an anime has to be from the Samurai X OVA's. Just, the sense of dread and anguish that washed over me when I watched the bandits murder Kenshin's caretakers was almost unrivaled, though I also have to say that Kamina was pretty sad, too.

Also, the part where all of the kids in Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni are murdered was kinda sad, too. :l

    Yeah...

It made it all the more moving, really, about Rika's bravery in the face of it all. In particular choosing to stay concious whilst Takano killed her.

In my opinion, I'd say L. It was depressing to me at least.

It may be a Rosebud Was The Sled thing and all, but that's still a spoiler you know.

HUGHES from FMA anime. WTF man? I'm not the biggest FMA fan, but I FREAKING CRIED. Also, Ed from the same anime. I also cried, in disbelief and sadness.

Hughes death was very sad. It was a tad overdone, but I sympathize with Mustang's grief, so it worked for me.

Would Nagisa's Death in Clannad be considered a death at all?
    Asterisks work miracles.
I'm the one who dies a lot.

Alright, my vote goes to Elfen Lied.
It's a toss-up for me between the nameless puppy being beaten to death or the one guys little sister on the subway (she was, like, 6).
Yeah dude, I hate that anime.
    I cannot be any clearer.
Take from this what you will, and please feel free to counter anything I have said with some opinions of your own. Which would strictly probably almost be an accepted algorithm essential to the construct and maintenance of a proper discussion.
    Just throwing that out there.

The most depressing death had to be in Neon Genisis Evangelion, where Misato Katsuragi died. The annoying part is she just happened to be my favourite character and the scene in which she died was probably one of the most powerful in anime (even if the rest of Evangelion was overrated).
    HE WILL BE MISSED...

Well, I just finished Darker Than Black, and I now have two new entries.

November 11 and Amber. You gotta love how symbolic November's death is... he was warned beforehand of it by Amber, and went anyway, defying logical explanation and solidifying that the contractors had truly evolved. And Amber, well... technically, she didn't die, but overused her ability, the cost of which is to age backwards. All of this to save everyone from the Downer Ending and reverse time to right before the explosion, allowing both Hei and Misaki to take a third option. What a great ending... *sniff*

It had to be my two favourite characters. It just fucking had to be.

...Well, OK, there were about 5 other deaths in the last few episodes too, but hey.

    School Days.
it's a throw up between depressing and just plain terrifying.

Girl goes crazy cause guy that she was set up with in the beginning of the series is going around sleeping with everybody, including the girl that set them up together, and she tricks the matchmaker, kills her off, then gets the boyfriend, and for some reason has black blood.... it then cuts to a scene of her on a boat petting the severed head of her boyfriend and talking to it.

I didnt sleep that night. it just..........was weiiiird.
Weakness is just weakness leaving the body.

-Cody Matthews. (first time i looked at it i just laughed. then i looked again and realized it was actually pretty great.)

Albert de Morcerf, has a best friend who secretly has a crush on him even though Albert NEVER realizes it. Albert challenges the vengeful Count of Monte Cristo to a duel for the honor of his father and mother. On the night before he's supposed to fight, Franz (the best friend) drugs him and takes his place. Needless to say, the viewer doesn't realize he's in the armor until he finally dies and Albert shows up and screams 'FRRRRAAAAANNNNZZZ'. Epic.
I just got to this part of Gankutsuou, and somehow I had a feeling it had already been posted here. And yes, it damn well deserves to be.

Re: What Anime Had the Most Depressing Death?

I know this is a double post, but this one has yet to be mentioned and really deserves to be. Spoilers ahead for episode 71 of Monster. Big ones.

The death of Wolfgang Grimmer, probably my favourite character from the series. His entire character amazed me, and his death was stunningly fitting. As a child, he was part of a horrific eugenics experiment along with Johan. The only enjoyment he could find in life was watching a TV show called "The Magnificent Steiner" (essentially The Incredible Hulk), in which the main character often finds himself in mortal peril, but then blacks out, leaving us to see him transform into the Magnificent Steiner. He was one of the few children who escaped that experiment alive, however, the experiments had dulled his emotions. The people who ran the project used his dulled emotions by making him a spy for them. He wound up in life threatening situations a few times, but blacked out, and upon waking up realised everyone was dead. Eventually, he realised that, in situations of mortal peril, he would become a rage-filled killing machine... just like his beloved Magnificent Steiner. He went on to raise a family, but one day, his detached state caused an accident that resulted in his son's death. This caused his wife to realise how jaded he has become, and she left him.

Eventually, towards the end of the series, he realises that he never knew how the show ended. When Johan's plan results in the town killing one another, Grimmer tries to confront the instigators, but upon doing so, a woman he was friends with is killed. He starts to freak out, but restrains himself, and manages to stay concious. He takes out the henchmen, all the while in his concious state, but is mortally wounded in the process. On his deathbed, he explains that he finally feels remorse for his son's death, and that in his dying crusade, he managed to free himself of his repressed emotions. With his dying words, he explains to us: "I'm sure I know that... at the end of The Magnificent Steiner... he turns into a human again..."

Re: What Anime Had the Most Depressing Death?

I might just be saying this because I'm currently watching Death Note, but from the first time L came into the show he was a favorite character of mine. I knew his death was inevitable and that he would eventually die, but watching the episode after his death...well, to say the least it just didn't seem like Death Note anymore and i already missed his character. :/
