I love Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur Legends. My all-time favourite Soulcalibur character is definitely Yoda. With his little robe and pointy green ears. :3
Anyway, I've been a fan of these games probably since the second instalment on the PS2 with Tekken's Heihachi Mishima making an appearance. That was awesome. Overall I think Soulcalibur has been a revolutionary series that modern gaming would be less without.
I like to feed on broken hearts
There ain't no taste like lovers falling apart
I've been playing Soul Calibur ever since it's first days on the Dreamcast. [What an investment that was!] It's definitely one of the prettiest fighting games, and IV was just a lot of fun to play, especially with the original character creator.
The latest Soul Calibur I've played is the third one, and I thought it was really awesome. I was actually going to buy the next gen one, but I think I decided to roll with Modern Warfare. Or was that the last DOA title I was looking at? I can't remember, now. LOL.
I've been playing Soul Caliber since the second Installment X3 What character did I always choose? LINK, lolz. Haven't played Legends, but I've gone ahead and had 3 and 4 as well. Over all, I usually go with the bigger brute, Nightmare or Sigfried when playing. Fun to play sometimes are Cassandra and Sophitia, though. Blargh, some of those stages are outright gorgeous, though x_x like, *gasp* beautiful. It makes me want to be able to make stuff like that -- but I'm not going to get into vectoring and CG and all that, though.
I've been playing it since Soulcalibur II.
I had the Gamecube version and my brother had Xbox. XD
I was hooooooookkeeeddd. Then my Gamecube broke and stopped reading discs. I got a new one a few months later but then the game vanished. >___>
I got Soulcalibur III a few days after it came out when I was sick for the week. I asked dad to go to Best Buy and get it for me...haha. I spent a lot of time on it. Most of it was eaten by the Chronicles of the Sword -.- ridiculous. I liked the character creator though, it added a little something different. I just didn't like the job system to it for some reason.
My brother picked up Solucalibur IV around last Christmas for $20 and ended up giving it to me. I've spent too much time on it. The character creator got better with more options and whatnot. I just wish there was more customization with the armors colors. Some parts you can't change the color of and then it just looks awkward and doesn't match.
and...I bought Darth Vader because curiosity got the best of me...waste of 5 bucks. I don't really like him. :/
oh, and uh...Kasaii and I like to be gay apparently and fight as dudes with Tira's style and critical finish each other. yaoi. YEAH.
I'm a Kilik and Cervantes fan myself...but people apparently don't like it when I play with their style.
I never even saw Legends out for sale, so I haven't played that. How is it?
But anyway.
Soul Calibur V just came out like two weeks ago and I preordered that shit so fast when I heard it was going to come out. Or rather I sent dad to do it for me because he has the money. herp derp. For some reason he bought me the $80 collector's edition, but I'm not complaining. I haven't looked at the art book or the behind the scenes disc or listened to the soundtrack, but I am enjoying the DLC armor it came with.
But on to the game portion.
Some improvements were definitely made. There's a lot more customization options and whatnot. A majority of my "good" points are with the character creator.
1. Many of the character customization equipment are unisex. Can be a plus or a minus, depending on how you feel about skirts and maid outfits for dudes.
2. More areas where you can put equipment on.
3. More options for color changes of equipment. Even some weapons can have their colors changed. There are patterns and stickers you can put on your character's skin as a tattoo or on their equipment if they're too plain for you.
4. More than just your character's muscularity can be changed. Their height, muscle mass, upper arm, forearm, pectoral, hip, thigh, calf, stomach, and waist sizes can all be adjusted separately.
5. More voice options, including an option to add "malfestation" (cursed by Soul Edge). It makes the voice sound echoed.
6. You can take unique pictures of your characters to use as thumbnails (and/or your player license image). It makes it easier to tell the custom characters apart from each other. Different frames and backgrounds are available for decoration.
7. You can now earn "titles" for your player license. They're just like the titles from the callsigns in Call of Duty: MW2 and MW3. Some are really random and entertaining. There's even a specific mode where you can battle to earn titles. Others just come when you level up.
8. Things are more attractive to look at, like the scenery, character designs, and whatnot.
9. You can register up to 3 rivals to compare your stats with. It's interesting to see what other people have done in the game, or pick at them for having no life.
10. Characters no longer scream repeatedly every time you hit them after they're KO'd.
11. Ezio Auditore is pretty cool as a guest character. I've never played Assassin's Creed, but I like shooting people in this with his crossbow.
But there's also a bunch of things I'm nit-picky about.
1. The story is too short and only focused on like one person. You only get to play as a total of three different characters (two have two different styles, so 5 different styles altogether). I wish there could have been more to the story or more paths to choose from so you could see everyone's viewpoint.
2. Not sure I'm digging the "new" characters that are just cloned styles of previous characters. Might as well have kept the old character.
3. The sizes of the equipment in creation are still terrible. They still morph as if your character is wearing very thick armor, so if you have thinner clothing on, the "upper body covering" and "hip equipment" will hang horribly off of your character (there's a large gap between the character and the equipment).
4. The character creator's skin tones are still too, well, skin toned. You can't have a light blue skin color without it being an ugly shade of green or purple.
5. Still not 100% of the equipment colors are customizable. This leads to clashing colors and some people being discontent.
6. There are two characters that have the exact same style, that being the Edge Master style (randomly switches between all styles). One of those characters would have been just fine. Two is just redundant. There's also one that rotates styles with only characters that can have Soul Calibur as a weapon. She's not TOO bad since it's only limited to some styles.
7. The old characters' styles have been modified. What you're used to from IV isn't going to be the same in V.
8. Zasalamel and Talim are gone. I kinda liked their styles.
Well.
That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll think about it and look into it later to see if there's anything I missed.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the new installment. There are things that could have been improved more, but doesn't that fit in with lots of games?
I've been playing this series since its arcade days (waaay back when I was a youngin'). When it came out on Dreamcast I was happy that I wouldn't have to sink a bunch of quarters to defeat the final boss. The arcade version of Soul Calibur had a mode where you can basically turn the players into water figures. The effect looked more metallic in the console version.
The series seems to want to pursue a newer storyline. I'm not quite sure what I think about it yet. The most recent installment, Soul Calibur V, seems a bit bare compared to the earlier installments (especially compared to Soul Calibur III). I'm looking forward to seeing where this franchise is headed.
