Re: What Kills an Anime for You?

    1. Romance - If romance is a sub-plot or a major part of the anime, it really, really ruins it for me. I'm not all about that shit. I want a good story and I don't want it to involve love.
(Note: This normally applies to het pairings as I am a yaoi fan (though not a crazy one). In any case, too much romance between anyone, man/man, man/woman, makes me want to puke)

    2. Naruto

    3. Ecchi

    4. Bad dubs

    5. Stupid animation styles (chibi crap, etc)

I sorta agree, I don't like a lot of romance either. But only romance I can handle is if it's tragic romance, kinda like in Angel Beats (which is one of my favorite animes).

    2. Naruto
    LOL.

    4. Bad dubs
    High-five.

    5. Stupid animation styles (chibi crap, etc)
    High-ten.

What ruins an anime for me (and even most shows and movies, or something with a storyline in general) is a cheesy happy ending. Like a Disney ending. Guh. Cannot that stand happiness hahaha. Don't get me wrong, I'm no emo or goth or sad person, I'm actually probably one of the most optimistic people you meet, but maybe I need tragic, sad endings to balance me out?

I can understand wanting the tragic or open-ended ending where things don't always get resolved. I've always been a realist, and seeing a work of art that embraces reality, that embraces the fact that not everything ends where the guy gets the girl and the world is saved for yet another day is, by far, better than your typical wank happy ending crap. Although every now and then I do enjoy one of those. I just find the not-so-happy endings to be way more powerful.

    1. Fillers.

    2. Predictability.

    3. Originality.

Wait- originality kills an anime for you? I would think it to be the other way around. Can I ask why?

Also, I would like to add that poor character interaction can kill it. I'm fine with a plotline, even if it's a bit holey, but if two characters are having a discussion, and the outcome of that discussion seems unrealistic, then either the writers or the voice actors did something wrong, thereby removing the realism, the magic, if you will, of the moment. Kills shit hard. It's usually a problem quite regularly in an anime, I've seen, too. If it happens once, I know it will happen many times more.

Woops. Yeah I meant when an anime isn't original.

lol, that makes a lot more sense. I think you would have been one in a hundred million though, to like unoriginal works. xD If you don't mind me asking, what things do you like in an anime, and why?

Plot and animation. There have been a couple of times where I really liked a series but the animation turned me off. Best example I can think of is Mobile Suit Gundam. Plot keeps me interested and good animation is well, sexy. Series like Code Geass and Death Note kept me interested until the very end. I'm also a huge Hajime no Ippo fan, which isn't the greatest looking series but it looked good enough to make me love it.

I've seen the animation from Code Geass and Death Note. Have you seen Basilisk? I just started watching it a couple weeks ago, but it's awesome. The animation is amazing, the characters are unique and bizarre, while still being easy to sympathize with. Honestly, it's just a great show. 24 episodes or so. Maybe a couple off on that. Regardless, it has everything I like in an anime.

Basilisk... I've heard of it but I haven't watched much anime in a while. I'll look it up though. Been waiting for Highschool of the Dead to finish so that I can watch all the episodes without having to wait, but it probably finished a while ago.

Re: What Kills an Anime for You?

The animation quality can instantly kill an anime for me. If it's cheaply or poorly animated, then I stop watching immediately. I understand not every anime can be like Cowboy Bebop with its fantastic visuals all the way through, but it can't look like crappy fan art. The only exception I've made with a poorly animated anime has been Shin Chan. That gets the pass since the crude and sloppy art style fits the vibe of the show.
