That fight scene was awesome, by the way. Kinda wish I'd seen that anime around before, 'cause I have no idea where to find it besides just buying it.
    I think I have to add something to my list that I haven't seen in here;
I can't watch an anime that is in a modern setting (with stipulations). If it's one of those that orients around a school, then I can't do it. If it doesn't have enough violence, then I will not watch. It doesn't need an excessive amount of violence or anything, but if it's few and far, then it'd better be good. I guess I just need a ratio between violence and storyline. An episode can focus around one or the other, and can have all of one, and none the other. However, the series itself must go back and forth. I wont watch an anime if it has no action, and is just drama, drama, drama. But on the flipside, if people die like crazy and it gets repetitive and has no plot, then I'm out. I'm just a picky anime fan.

You can be as badass as you want, but if your some sort of Goku wannabe, or some kid with an attitude problem, I'll probably want to see that character die and be gutted, no matter how much the community loves him.

I.E.: Kurosaki Ichigo. He had such potential, but he was ruined. Lame.

    2. Animation quality.

I grew up watching lots of old martial arts movies, and newer ones, too. Most of the reason I watch anime is for character development, but I also appreciate highly detailed, and amazing fight scenes. You want an example?

Dude, that anime looks awesome! I need to check that shit out!

I know I-m late to this but...

Unused plot! anyone who saw for example...*I give up I don-t know how to use spoiler tag* knows what I'm talking about.

I could use spoiler tags if someone wants to know.

I have no problem with SMALL fanservice

Umm... I would say for me, it would be super overly violent girls that does not listen to reason and takes their anger on other characters, which is usually in most comedy genre animes. I don't mind fan service, but too much kills it as well. And characters that goes "I don't want to fight" but watches their friends/family/innocents die until it's too late.....

Yup, definitely things that kills it for me.

I'm with ya, Sumo. Too much of anything isn't necessarily a good thing.

I love how Haruhi is a tag in this thread.

Anyway, what bugs me in a lot of anime is when one character, usually the Ensemble Darkhorse, becomes so popular that he takes up the screen time easily occupied by the other 12 Captains despite having a really bland character just because he's a white-haired prettyboy and shotacon fangirls dig him.

I think I may have gone a little too specific there.

@Lind: Since you used the word "Captain", I assume you're referring to Bleach?

Anyway, I really don't have any turnoffs for anime. Not generally speaking.
Things like filler and fanservice are sometimes done well and sometimes aren't.
Example of "Badly Done": Kanokon. /cringe

I suppose something obvious like "Bad Plotline" would be one. >_>
Also, I prefer seinan, but I've liked stuff from all over.
I typically don't care for "romantic" anime.
UNLESS they can back it up with good humor.
    Example: Anything by Ken Akumatsu.

    Cornyness, most of the time.

Although, I don't watch anime anyways lol. I just read the mangas

@BJ: I was referring to Squad 10 Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya. He's the most popular character in Bleach, for very poor reasons, and whenever one Captain needs to be involved, it's him. And then he gets his own fucking movie. No seriously, a whole frickin' movie! I mean, the Captains of squads 4, 7, 8 and 13 have had hardly any air time, desperately need to prove how awesome they are, but no. Why? Because It Is Always Squad 10. (That needs to be a trope.)

I mean, we don't even know what Jushiro Ukitake's powers even are yet. Could we at least get that?

So yeah, it pisses me off when a show gives a redundant character too much limelight.

    Exhibit A:

    i rest my case.

You know... the Japanese version IS slightly better, but they're both kind of over the top and silly with the whole laughing thing. But then again, most maniacal laughter in any show is over the top and right silly. LOL

I agree. There is only a small noticeable difference. :/
But, then again, VAs mean very little to me, and I'm rarely bothered by "bad dubs".

And let's not forget the best maniacal laughter of all:

I thought they both sounded fake, really.
But good maniacal laughter is hard to come by, since, by definition, it's seriously over the top.

Pretty much. You know... I might actually make a maniacal laughter thread. That would be pretty fun.

Re: What Kills an Anime for You?

There's not really a lot that can kill an anime for me. I am pretty good with liking a lot of things but of course there's always certain things that irk me.

    1. too much fanservice, like in Gurren Lagann. I like the character Yoko but her outfit...it's too slutty for me. I can't really stomach seeing girls dress like sluts in animes, even if they are my favorite characters. Or like Loli and Menoli from Bleach, or even Lilynette. I don't need to see little girls portrayed as hookers, it's not flattering or even attractive. After awhile, one grows to be very aggrivated with how women are drawn in animes.

    2. If it's Naruto

    3. Yaoi fangirls. And I'm not talking about the normal fangirls, I'm talking about the crazy psycho ones who think EVERYONE in the anime is gay for another. Like Bleach, Ichigo is paired with Renji, Grimmjow, Ulquiorra, his hollow self, Ishida, Kenpachi, basically every guy in Bleach is paired together, despite there being evidence that it can't be possible. It really bothers me when the fangirls, even after knowing that it can't be possible for the character to be gay, still go 'OMFG HE'S SO GAY FOR SO AND SO!'. Another anime that this is true for, is Katekyo Hitman Reborn!. The main character, Tsuna, it has been said numerous times that he has a crush on this girl Kyoko. Does that mean anything to fangirls? Nope, he's apparently gay for every one of his guardians and rivals >.< This crazy fangirlism is even true for video games, Kingdom Hearts being the worst offender of it. Despite the knowledge of Sora liking Kairi, Kairi liking sora, Namine being part of Kairi so therefore likes Roxas, Roxas being part of Sora so therefore liking Namine, Axel being basically Reno with a different look, all of these characters are paired together and I have heard fangirls try to fight with me that they are so clearly gay. How is that possible? A friend of mine tried fighting with me that Roxas and Axel were gay, which can't be true as Axel's personality is that of Reno's, just a different look as stated by the creators, and Roxas is sora and sora loves Kairi >.< It's one thing to be a fangirl and imagine something, but to fight that they are gay when there's so much evidence proving otherwise bothers me.

    4. Fights that take 15+ episodes/chapters to finish. Bleach is guilty of this one. If the fight is truly awesome and worth watching that many episodes, fine, but most cases it's just them talking, then fight for a bit, more talking, fight for a bit, etc.

    5. Crazy fangirls that go 'OMG HE'S MINE! YOU CAN'T HAVE HIM! MINE, ALL MINE!! I CLAIM HIM!'. Calm down girls, it's a fake person who doesn't even exist.

    6. Crappy english dubs. I am rather tired of seeing Jonny Yong Basch, a.k.a the voice of Ichigo, in practically every anime. I prefer voice actors who can manipulate their voice to do a whole range of voices, not just play the same types of characters all over again. I really like to sit there and go 'who is that?' and then be surprised. I also would like to see those who do English dubs to actually try to put forth the effort. What happened to the days when anime english dubs were on par with the Japanese versions, or even a little better? Like Samurai Champloo, I love both versions but the English version especially was awesome!

and I'm sure that right now this is all I can think of
It's painful, the pain has already broken the illusion of our hopes and dreams
On the line between reality and ideals
It hurts, the pain has already brought to mind traces from the corners of our hearts
Of the reality we took on on that day

I was just about to say this! Recent anime has so much fanservice that it's kind of turned me off from the genre in general. I'm still holding out for an anime to blow me away like back in the day.
