Question What Kills an Anime for You?

Most of you guys watch animes, or at least try to watch animes. As such, I want to post a question to you guys:

What kills an anime for you and makes you stop watching it? Is it the animation style? Is it the extreme amount of fanservice? Is it just annoying, or typical characters?

I want to hear what kills an anime for you.

It takes quite a bit for an anime to be killed for me because I've seen enough of an anime to really take notice of something that annoys me i simply get to curious to see whats gonna happen and how the story is gonna unfold.

    1. Extreme amount of fanservice.

The first time I encountered so much fanservice it annoyed me was in Kiddy Grade. Everytime I look at Lumière in her standard outfit I just think "ARE FUCKING SERIOUS???" She marches around like shes some high and mighty civilized lady and then dresses like shes a child slut no matter how god aweful that may sound its true. And yes I get the whole thing that she is actually 350 years old or something like that but she still looks like a child. Also there are so many fight scenes where half the screen is devoted to action and the other is devoted to upskirt. I did end up finishing the series though, albeit I missed several episodes since I saw it on TV and it just wasn't worth my time to go back a watch the re-run to figure out witch ones I missed)

Next you have Ikkitousen. Luckily there are no child sluts in this one. But there is too much upskirt in this supposed to be fighting anime. And every single girl is insanely large boobs and are groped by guys every two seconds. Once again this a fighting anime not a hentai. If it were hentai then I'd say great make'em as big two story building thats your business but lets keep that in hentai and out of fighting animes.

    2. If Naruto is the anime

    3. Boring plotlines

Only encountered a anime with such a crap plot that I actually got bored of it one time fortenently. It was the anime Suzuka. Its about some guy thats trying to win over the heart of this girl on his HS's track team. That is it. Although I'll admit it did partially make up for a poor storyline with interesting characters but the storyline was to lacking and I never finished the anime. I might finish it eventually though.

    4. Subs

Inless an anime is simply mind blowingly amazing I will not watch subs. The only time I ever watched subs and still throughly enjoyed the anime was Last Exile and thats because I love airships to no end. Other then that I tend to avoid subs like its the black death.

This next one is not really a killer for me it was just annoying enough that I need to rant. This is the very first anime that I've ever seen where animation style actually managed to bother me and that was in Saikano. The character's noses drove me insane.

It was only a few years ago that I began to watch anime online; before that I had to rely on my t.v station.

I like fanservice, but yeah, too much of it without continuing the story just pisses me off. "Okay, we get that she likes squeezing the other girl's breasts, but what about the wizard's plan? D=" (lulz, I made that up, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's a concept in some anime :P)

Almost all animes I've watched, I've stuck through it, but the main thing that puts me off would be the voice actors. I stopped watching Naruto after a couple of episodes because of the atrocious voice actor of Naruto. "Believe it!" Oh yeah, I believe it...Believe that I never wanna hear your voice again -_-

Dragonball Z I stopped watching because, frankly, it took so damn long for it to continue on my t.v. station, so while it was showing re-runs I ended up reading the episode summaries. That and the nerdification of Gohan. I mean, wtf?

I stopped watching Bleach because the fillers were pissing me off. I watched through the Bounto Arc because it wasn't bad (except for the fact that Ichigo is the one who beats the big boss, not Ishida as I thought it would be), but after that, I just quit it.

One anime I actually have completely downloaded on my computer but haven't finished watching is Monochrome Factor. It's a very fanservicey anime, but the story isn't bad, however there are just repetitive things that happens in every episode that pisses me off. Showing FULL transformations of each character, the one supporting female character (who I already hate) always ends up in trouble which somehow coincidentally ties into what the main characters have to deal with anyways.

Sometimes even the story themselves piss me off. Some animes end up deviating from the story of the original manga version almost completely and I just end up confused and irritated. Especially when it comes to characters. And example would be the anime Nabari no Ou. In the manga the main character Miharu can actually kick ass, but in the anime he's so damn helpless and always has to be protected.

    So yeah, there you go.
Hi, sorry about my lacking presence at RSF. I got busy with my off-line life, and though it's settled a bit, there's not much to do here without people posting (which is kind of my fault >.<)

Awesome posts so far, Judge and Fusionist!

As for myself, here's my two cents on what either kills an anime for me, or what will make me not even watch an anime:

    1.) 'Childish' animation.
If the animation of a show has characters with eyes that are half the size of their head, chances are I'll refuse to watch it. A good example of this is in the anime Shana:

Animation like this just irks me and turns me off right away. The only anime with borderline 'childish' characters that I watched was Elfen Lied, and that anime was far from childish. I realize this is a silly reason for not watching animes, but it's hard for me to take a good story seriously, with such a childish appearance. I can't bring myself to watch Code Geass because of this too, though the dub seems pretty awful as well, which makes me even more uninterested.

    2.) Confusing or Abstract Plot.
If an anime has such an abstract or hard to follow plot that I can't make sense of it, it's not worth watching for me. Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, and Boogiepop Phantom were three animes that fall under this category. All three animes also dragged out the stories quite a bit, though Boogiepop Phantom managed to be somewhat enjoyable.

    3.) Stereotyped, typical characters.
I can't stand a show with a cast that I've seen before. If an anime has two or more 'super kawai slut' characters, then I'm not interested. A lot of times I see a dynamic of super slutty yet cute characters who make the lives of male characters a living hell. Those shows are just dull to me. I also don't like too many animes with too many 'robotic' characters in it, a lot of animes seem to be going for these sort of characters, like the Alien chick in Haruhi, here:

    4.) Random or Pointless Plots.

These are those animes that just don't make ANY sense, and are filled with stupid, 'funny' scenes. Excel Saga, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and FLCL are a few examples of this. Excel Saga was definitely the worst offendor of the three.

    5.) Bastardization of the storyline.
I've seen one anime die this very painful death: Escaflowne. It started off as a great, promising fantasy anime with Mechs, and eventually became twisted into this horrid love triangle. I honestly liked the the movie more than the entire series. Another example, even though I actually enjoyed the anime for the most part, is Fullmetal Alchemist. For those that kept up with the manga, I certainly wasn't the only one going: "....Germany?!" xD I realize the anime went ahead quicker than the manga, but, still.

    6.) Dragging on forever.
Fusionist mentioned this, and I absolutely agree. I couldn't watch DBZ much after it took over FOUR entire episodes for the planet Namek to 'blow up in 5 minutes.' It was just ridiculous. If an anime can't get into the main plot within the first quarter of episodes, it's not worth it.

7.) Animes with episodes in the triple digits.
I have not, till this day, found a worthwhile anime that had more than 99 episodes. Bleach, Inuyasha, and Naruto are three animes that could easily be cut down to 60 episodes, because of all of the filler. This actually brings me onto my next point.

    8.) FILLER!
If an anime is filled with filler, I can't stand watching it. Recap episodes are hard enough for me to endure, so episodes that are entirely unrelated to the main plot are just not worth watching for me.

    9.) Fanservice.
If an anime can't grab the attention of its viewers with characters and plots alone, then using sexual means is just sad. I've noticed an increasing trend in animes these days that have fanservice, and it's just a cheap tactic to gain viewers.

I think that about covers it all. xD

    Agreed 100%.

Then there are anime conventions in general... they have nothing to do with anime itself but wow. The way about 90% of the people act participating in said events just kinda ruins the whole thing for me haha.

Dang I'm actually kinda surprised that someone who likes Hard Gay doesn't like wacky story lines

Haha totally opposite with me. I actually saw the movie first and thought it was for the most part shit. Then I saw the anime and thought it was amazing. For me the movie was the bastardization if anything

On the next episode of DRAGON BALL Z Goku is STILL powering up. Hahaha

Wait, even, like Dragon Ball? or is that auto excluded?

    I most strongly agree
God I love using green instead of red when responding to the post like I did. I used to use Red for that kinda thing. And now I finally switched to green. It looks so much better. Don't know why though.

    Whaaaa, I'm sorry >_<

But there aren't any spoiler tags here yet on RSF, so it's not my fault :P

    Although I'd argue what I said wasn't very spoiler-ish anyways >_>

I forgot about the stretching lengths in stories. Yep, a big turn off for sure and DBZ is famous for that >_<

But about disliking big eyes, isn't that, like, how you differentiate anime from western cartoons?

So yeah, that doesn't bother me *shrugs*

Agreed. I hate it when an anime has childish animation. The characters are suppose to be in their late teens-early 20s and they look like little girls with boobs. I understand that some Asian girls tend to look young and very cute for their age, but Anime makes it too extreme. >_>

    2.) Confusing or Abstract Plot.

Oh god yes, I know what you mean. I can't think of any Anime on top of my head that fits that but it's a very Japanese thing from what I've heard. >_> For some reason the Japanese love really abstract and complicated plots.
    8.) FILLER!
If an anime is filled with filler, I can't stand watching it. Recap episodes are hard enough for me to endure, so episodes that are entirely unrelated to the main plot are just not worth watching for me.
Ugh yes, I hate fillers. >_> I hate it how most of them are really stupid and pointless like: "Hey, look there's a town! Let's check it out! Oh, it seems like the town leader is missing the town's magic rock. I KNOW! Let's help this town find it's magic rock!" While going to look for the magic rock some mean old thieves try to fight them but with the strength and kindness they overcome the evil thieves and retrieve the magical rock! The town is happy and thanks them, the end.

it's whether the story plot is worst
    or the characters are overacting.
i don't like that kind of animes.
    i just hate it.

What ruins an anime for me is if the storyline is too distant from reality. I've tried to watch some animes that people love, and I've even seen threads for them here, but I can't get into it at all. Also, there needs to be two main factors, 1. Death - If people don't die, but avoid actually killing people off over and over and over, then it just bores the hell out of me. 2. Age - I don't want the main character to be a child. I would like maturity in my main character, and I'd like to see some romantic development that goes somewhere. That won't happen if it's a child, and even sometimes with an adult (Inuyasha). Psshaw.

It's because it's easier on the eyes.

I think fillers are by far the worst for me. Followed shortly with dragging out the plot. I've sincerely lost my interest in Naruto and Bleach for this factor. For some random curiosity I take a peek at it here and there but really? Seriously? It could've been cut down a LOT.
And the Fanservice!? Kuroshitsuji is a NEW anime and still it has so many yaoi references that I lost interest after 4 episodes. 4!!

A generic appearance. Some animes just look...common. They don't do anything to set themselves apart. The animation may be cheap or poorly done, the characters may be uninteresting, or the plot may be tired and cliche.

Excessive filler and annoying voice work can also drive me away.

  14. #14
Characters design is a biggie for me. One Piece is a great example of that. It could have great this and great that but the graphics are just for me. I can't watch it solely because of that.

    Uninteresting plot. 'Nuff said.

Fillers. It bores me. I actually want to know what happens next mind you.

  15. #15
Low quality animation pisses me off. It makes me bored while watching a certain anime. Also, boring plot and poor subs even dubbs make me irritated as I'm watching. I'm into specific genres so I don't watch animes that is off my type. How would it be if I watch the all?. Still, I LOVE ANIME.

    Useless Plots:
I hate when the plot is the same old, Guy likes girl, Girls likes other guy, Other guy don't like girl. I might as watch Days of our Lives. Also plots like Bleach's Bount Arc. There is no way for me to describe how much i hated bleach at the time. I don't think i will even go into it.

    Fillers:
Again, Bount Arc. Talk about a filler. At least Naruto tried (and i use tried very lightly) to make it interesting. As you can probably tell i hated the Bount Arc

    Confusing Plots:
This is where shows like, Air and Elfen Lied come in. To this day i don't know what the hell those shows where about.

    Subtitties:
Yes i called them sub-titties. There are like a size A cup when you wanted a C or a D cup(no homo). I hate them and i am lazy.

Crappy live-action movies COULD prove hazardous to animes, but only if I happened to watch the movie prior to the anime. Bad impressions are killer.

Damn you, DB: Evolution / Cowboy Bebop with Keanu Reeves...

  18. #18
I tend to watch more Seinen anime than anything else, so what might kill things for you guys, might actually interest me more. Fanservice? Doesn't bug me.

    1. Shitty characters.
You can be as badass as you want, but if your some sort of Goku wannabe, or some kid with an attitude problem, I'll probably want to see that character die and be gutted, no matter how much the community loves him.

I.E.: Kurosaki Ichigo. He had such potential, but he was ruined. Lame.

    2. Animation quality.

I grew up watching lots of old martial arts movies, and newer ones, too. Most of the reason I watch anime is for character development, but I also appreciate highly detailed, and amazing fight scenes. You want an example?

    Animation style and plot.

If the plot doesn't make sense, or if it's just plain ol' boring, or hell, lame, the chances of me watching more than an episode is nonexistent.

When it comes to animation, I usually keep away from anything that doesn't look aesthetically appealing. I'm not sure why. Shows like Cowboy Bebop and Galaxy 999 must have spoiled me. But whatever the case, if it doesn't look good, I'm probably not watching it.

If the plot is really good, though, I might stomach it.

  20. #20
For me it would have to be characters and plot. Only anime I watch currently is one piece, I tryed bleach but the fillers drove me nuts and I just stopped, Naruto got too sasuke oriented and seemed like the whole anime was just based around him, haven't watched shippuden except for the nine tails fight.

I also really hate fanservice alot, if it's even just for a moment It irks me, but thats just me.
